Growing up in a small New England town, my sister and I had to share rooms. This was not fun since she was six years my elder. I was always getting her upset by not keeping my half of the room clean. I think it was because she was a little neurotic but I could never prove it. Then later as we grew up I found out that sisters nine times out of ten do not get a long anyway so I should have kept my purple wall paper and bright yellow flowers..."Flower Power" to all. The only thing my parents did let us try to work things out and that was allowing us to purchase a Sphinx area rug for the room.
Once again, we could not agree. It would have been easier if they did not have so much to choose from but the designs were too pretty. My sister of course wanted the floral design and I wanted the big bold colors. We were able to talk our parents into letting us both get our own Sphinx area rugs. We screamed with delight and we were happy for the next five minutes as the area rugs were brought into the house and put in our room. I loved waking up and placing my bare feet on my Sphinx area rugs as the cooler temperatures were closing in it got pretty nippy in the mornings and the hardwood floors were a little cool.

My sister would do the same, smile as she stepped on her area rug. Hers was perfect and vacuumed to no end. Mine got the once a week brush over and I loved it. When we grew up and as we left the house my parents let us take the Sphinx rugs with us. It was funny because my sister asked if she could take mine so she would have something to remind her of me every time she looked at it. So, I took hers and it looks lovely in the nursery under my daughter's crib who I named after my mom and sister. Sometimes it is the little things that make a wonderful remembrance piece.
